eIDAS 2.0
eIDAS 2.0 is the revised EU regulation on electronic identification and trust services, which among other things introduces the EUDI wallet.
The original eIDAS Regulation (EU) No 910/2014 has governed electronic signatures, seals, timestamps and other trust services in the single market since 2016. Regulation (EU) 2024/1183, in force since 20 May 2024, adds in particular the EUDI wallet, electronic attestations of attributes and new qualified trust services, for example for electronic archiving and ledgers.
For agent evidence, eIDAS is relevant twice: as the basis for qualified timestamps and signatures with legal effect, and as the framework for state-recognized digital identities of principals.
Example
A German company secures its agents' receipt chains with qualified timestamps from a provider recognized under eIDAS. In a dispute, the law presumes the accuracy of the time, and the other side must prove the opposite.
How it differs
eIDAS governs trust services and identification, not the authority of agents. Switzerland has its own, comparable rules in ZertES and the e-ID act; eIDAS does not apply there directly.
In practice
- For evidence that must hold up in court, use qualified trust services under eIDAS.
- Obtain anchors for qualified providers from the official trusted lists of the EU states.
- For customers in Switzerland, check whether ZertES rather than eIDAS is decisive.
Role in KYA
KYA verifies timestamps and signatures technically. Whether a provider is qualified under eIDAS follows from the trust anchor the verifying party provides, for example from the EU trusted list.

Frequently asked questions
What does eIDAS 2.0 change compared with eIDAS?
Above all, it introduces the EUDI wallet, electronic attestations of attributes and new qualified trust services, for example for archiving and ledgers.
Since when does eIDAS 2.0 apply?
Regulation (EU) 2024/1183 entered into force on 20 May 2024. Individual obligations, such as providing the wallets, have their own deadlines.
What does eIDAS mean for AI agents?
eIDAS does not govern the authority of agents, but it provides qualified timestamps and signatures with legal effect and state-recognized identities for principals.
Does eIDAS apply in Switzerland?
Not directly. Switzerland governs electronic signatures in ZertES and the e-ID in its own act. For activities in the EU, eIDAS services can still be relevant.
What are electronic attestations of attributes?
Signed confirmations of individual attributes of a person, such as a professional qualification or an authority to represent, that are kept in the EUDI wallet and presented selectively. Under eIDAS 2.0, qualified attestations have the same effect as lawfully issued attestations on paper.
