## How it works

A [status list](https://knowyouragent.ch/en/knowledge/glossary/status-list) is a signed token whose status_list claim contains a compressed bit string. Each credential, such as a mandate, refers to an index in this list. The tool decodes the token, unpacks the bit string in the browser and reads the value for each index: 0 valid, 1 invalid, 2 suspended, 3 application-specific.

## What the decoder shows

- Bits per entry, usually 1 or 2.
- The number of entries and how many of them have a value other than 0.
- Issuer, subject and times of the token.
- On request, the value at a given index, as stated in the mandate under status.

## What the decoder does not do

It verifies neither the [status list](https://knowyouragent.ch/en/knowledge/glossary/status-list)'s signature nor whether it belongs to the mandate and is current. For the revocation check, provide the status list on the [verification page](https://knowyouragent.ch/en/verify) under status lists.

## Typical uses

- **Tracing revocation:** see whether a specific mandate is marked as revoked in the list.
- **Checking a list:** verify that a status list you created has the expected size and contents.
- **Monitoring operations:** track the number of non-valid entries over time.

## Troubleshooting tips

The index in the mandate counts from zero. With two bits per entry, each entry takes two bits, so one byte holds four entries. If the decoder reports an error when unpacking, the lst field is usually truncated or not compressed with DEFLATE.

## Frequently asked questions

### Where do I find a mandate's index?

In the mandate under status, usually in the status_list field with idx and uri. The index gives the position in the list, the uri the location of the status list.

### Why is the list compressed?

So that it stays small even for very many credentials. The bit string is compressed with DEFLATE; the tool unpacks it locally with the browser's own means.

### Does a status list reveal whose mandate is revoked?

No. It contains only values at positions. Only someone who knows the credential with its index can read the status of a specific mandate.

### Can I paste a status list as JSON too?

Yes. Besides the signed token, the decoder understands a JSON object with the bits and lst fields.

### What does the value 3 mean in a status list?

With two bits per entry, four values are possible. The values 0 to 2 are defined; an issuer can use the value 3 for its own purposes. A [verifying party](https://knowyouragent.ch/en/knowledge/glossary/verifying-party) must know what it then means. If in doubt, ask the issuer.
